I recently made a new Mesmer and I've zipped through Factions and Prophecies with the following build:

I don't have Cry of Pain -- that slot is usually taken up by a Signet of Capture. The rest of the skills are Core/Prophecies and will be easy for you to get.

Is this the most uber PvE character ever? No. It's clearly inferior to my Warrior and Ele in PvE. But it's fun and has no problems blasting through normal mode with Heroes + Henchmen.

And now I'm primarily using the character in PvP, with a totally different build that's a lot of fun. The reason you're getting some mixed reactions to your post is that Mesmers are better in PvP than PvE. Still a very fun character though, and a nice change of pace.

[Glyph of lesser energy] Elementalist would be a good secondary choice till you work the bugs out. And the suggestion is only to use this skill only. Balance in your choice of Mesmer skills

Me/ Mo or Me/N, depending on whether you want to have some utility or be a damage-dealer.

Since you can eventually change your 2nd, it's not that critical to "make the right choice."

Me/Mo gives good survivability, though!
